The coating of tablets can be measured in the µm range using optical coherence tomography (OCT). The new patented OSeeT system from Phyllon is able to measure the thickness of the coating in a pan coater in real time. For this purpose, laser light at 830 nm is coupled into the coater via a sapphire window.

Due to the high measuring rate of 100 kHz, the movement of the tablets in the coater is used to register cuts through individual tablets. From this, both the mean coating thickness and the homogeneity of the coating are determined in-line.
