CARS spectrometer

Efficient CARS spectroscopy

The CARS spectrometer offers a powerful extension to classical Raman spectroscopy and overcomes its most common limitations. Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS) provides a significantly stronger Raman signal and suppresses interfering fluorescence and luminescence effects. With modern laser technology and photonic fibers, it is now possible to implement broadband CARS setups that are compact, easy to adjust and fast to measure.

Technical implementation

The CARS option is offered as an extension for a Raman microscope. It comprises a sub-nanosecond microchip laser with white light generation, the precise coupling of both laser beams onto the sample under the microscope and the acquisition of the CARS signal via the Raman microscope optics. The evaluation is carried out using the existing Raman software so that Raman and CARS spectra of the same sample can be compared directly.

Advantages of CARS spectroscopy

Thanks to the high signal intensity and the suppression of interfering background signals, the system enables fast, reliable analyses even with highly fluorescent samples. The technology thus opens up new possibilities in areas where conventional Raman spectroscopy reaches its limits.

Areas of application

The CARS spectrometer is particularly suitable for medical technology, for example for the rapid mapping of tumor tissue. In food analysis, it enables the analysis of samples with high fluorescence without complex pre-treatment. In environmental technology, it is increasingly being used to efficiently analyze complex mixtures of substances.
