The achromatic precision retarder from Meadowlark Optics opens up completely new possibilities in optical measurement technology thanks to its almost constant phase delay over a wavelength range from 485 nm to 1650 nm. In addition, standardized quarter-wave and half-wave versions are available for the visible ranges 545-630 nm, 555-730 nm, 630-835 nm and 735-985 nm as well as for the near-infrared range 920-1240 nm and 1200-1650 nm, so that the retarder can be flexibly integrated into inline spectroscopy systems and polarization analyses. The achromatic waveplate not only impresses with its excellent spectral coverage, but also with its outstanding homogeneity of the phase shift across the entire field of view.
Technological structure and performance features
The achromatic precision retarder consists of several precisely aligned birefringent polymer films. These are laminated between precision-polished, optically flat N-BK7 substrates. As a rule, a retardation accuracy of up to λ/100 is achieved and the wavefront distortion is limited to a maximum of λ/4, thus ensuring minimal influence on the beam shape even in the most demanding applications. In addition, the thermal stability between -20 °C and +50 °C and a limited beam deviation of ≤ 1 arc minute ensure reliable operation under changing ambient conditions. Even with intensive laser irradiation of up to 500 W/cm² in continuous operation and pulse energies of up to 600 mJ/cm² (20 ns, visible) or 4 J/cm² (20 ns, 1064 nm).
Customization options and typical areas of application
As a rule, we supply the achromatic precision retarder in the standard diameters of 25.4 mm and 50.8 mm with variable clear apertures to enable optimum integration into your optical systems. We also manufacture customer-specific wavelength ranges from 400 nm to 1800 nm as well as individual retardation values according to your specifications. On request, we can equip the achromatic waveplate with special anti-reflective coatings. This further reduces the degree of reflection in critical spectral windows and maximizes transmission.
