ColdBlock CBS – Sample Digestion System Compact

  • Up to 20 samples simultaneously per CBS digester
  • For sample amounts up to approx. 1 g
  • Scalable to 40, 60, or 80 samples
  • Open, non-pressure dissolution method
  • No moving parts
  • Low maintenance
  • Software control via iPad, tablet, or laptop

The ColdBlock CBS Sample Digestion System Compact is a compact sample digestion system for small sample quantities and high sample throughput. It was developed for laboratories that want to digest solid samples quickly, reproducibly, and safely for subsequent elemental analysis by ICP-OES or ICP-MS.

The ColdBlock Technology utilizes focused short-wavelength infrared radiation in combination with a special cooling zone. This enables rapid, open, and non-pressure-based digestions without long heating or cooling times. According to the manufacturer, typical digestions can be performed in less than 20 minutes.

The ColdBlock CBS is the smallest variant of the ColdBlock Pro Series and was specifically designed as Compact sample preparation system designed for laboratories with small sample volumes and high sample throughput. A single CBS Digestor can process up to 20 samples simultaneously. The modular architecture allows multiple digestors to be combined into systems with 40, 60, or 80 sample positions.

Software Control & Method Management

Operation is performed using the ColdBlock software control system, which can be used on an iPad, tablet, or laptop. Users can create, save, and reuse digestion methods for later measurement series. This facilitates the standardization of routine processes and improves reproducibility in everyday laboratory work.

ColdBlock Technology vs. Classic Microwave Digestion Systems

Unlike classical microwave digestion systems, ColdBlock works with an open, non-pressure-based approach. The technology uses focused short-wavelength infrared energy to efficiently heat the sample, while a cooling zone supports process control. This eliminates long ramp-up and cool-down times, and samples can be further processed directly after digestion.

Sample containers & scope of delivery

The CBS uses 50 ml borosilicate glass test tubes with a 28 mm diameter. Quartz vessels are available for special applications. According to the manufacturer, a single CBS kit contains the digestor, controller, 40 borosilicate test tubes, two racks, two transfer trays, and a spare lamp.

Advantages of the ColdBlock CBS – Compact Sample Digestion System

  • High sample throughput with small sample volumes
  • Significantly shorter digestion times compared to many classic methods
  • Scalable for increasing laboratory requirements (20–80 sample positions)
  • Open system without pressure vessels
  • Simple operation via software-based method control
  • Low maintenance due to robust construction
  • Suitable for routine analysis and research
  • Especially interesting for laboratories with many small samples
