The Superachromatic Precision Retarder from Meadowlark Optics sets the standard for high-precision polarization modulation over an unprecedented wavelength range. With a standard coverage of 420 to 1100 nm and 800 to 1700 nm and the option of a quarter-wave or half-wave retarder, this device meets the requirements of demanding applications in research and industry. Due to the wide spectral coverage, the stock range does not require an anti-reflection coating, but we do offer customized coatings on request to further minimize reflections.

Design and functional principle of the Superachromatic Precision Retarder

At the heart of the broadband retarder are several birefringent polymer films that are precisely aligned and laminated between optically flat N-BK7 windows. The precise lamination ensures homogeneous phase retardation across the entire field of view. As more polymer layers are used, the overall transmission is slightly lower than with classic precision retarders. In return, you benefit from a uniform retardation accuracy of ± λ/50 across the entire spectral range.

Technical highlights and measuring accuracy

The superachromatic precision retarder impresses with a proven retardation accuracy of ± λ/50 and a comprehensive measurement protocol with over 25 wavelength points, which documents a precision of ± 0.001 waves. This makes the ultra-broadband retarder perfect for applications in which the smallest deviations in the phase shift are significant, for example in elliptical polarization analysis or electro-optical modulation.

Customization options and typical areas of application

Customer-specific versions of the superachromatic precision retarder can not only be tailored to any wavelength range and retardation parameters, but can also be provided with specialized anti-reflection coatings to further optimize performance in spectrally limited systems.
