Faraday isolator

Faraday insulators for stable laser systems

Faraday isolators protect laser sources from returning reflections.
Such back reflections interfere with the mode coupling, impair the
frequency stability and damage laser diodes. The Faraday effect makes
protection possible: A magnetized TGG crystal turns the
polarization plane of the light by 45°. This rotation is not reciprocal -
returning light no longer reaches the input. Typical
Insulation values are between 30 and 60 dB. The insertion losses
remain below 1 dB.

Applications and industries

Faraday isolators are used wherever laser sources are used.
must be secured against optical feedback. Laser spectroscopy,
fiber optic communication systems, interferometric measurement setups and
quantum optics are among the typical fields of application. In the
material processing, they secure the resonator against back reflections from the
Workpiece.
